Vauban Citadel

The citadel was built between 1667 and 1672 following plans drawn by Vauban. The inhabitants of Arras nicknamed it « the beautiful useless one » as the town was never under siege again after its construction. It does however remain a beautiful example of 17th century military architecture. To the side of the square, a small, baroque-style chapel adds the finishing touch. “The Firing Squad Wall” located outside the walls, at the heart of the fortifications, pays homage to the 218 members of the French resistance who were shot in the citadel trenches during the Second World War.
