Fine arts museum
The Arras Fine Arts Museum, which occupies a large area of Saint-Vaast abbey, has one of the most remarkable collections in provincial museums. Don’t miss the art galleries with paintings from the 17th century, and the French and Old Dutch schools (Champaigne, Vignon, Lebrun, Largillière, Rubens, etc), and the widest collection in France (outside the Louvre) of large 17th century religious paintings, amongst which you will find a dozen “Mays” from the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris.
The museum is also home to some of the most beautiful remnants of the history of Arras : antique archaeology (the Nemetacum Gallo-Roman site and coins from the hoard of Beaurains) medieval sculpture, cathedral treasure, 18th century Arras porcelain, landscapes from the Arras school of painting (Corot, Dutilleux, Desavary, etc), and a unique Arras tapestry (Arrazi) for which the town was renowned in the 15th century.
