Arts quarter
Surrounding the Theatre Square (under construction until 2006), a small concentration of cultural, historical and tourist sites have made this a pleasant area to walk around, where over a few hundred metres you can let yourself be guided by the enjoyment of discovering new things.
The walk starts in rue des Capucins, with the Noroit Centre, a pionneer for modern art North of Paris. It continues to place du Théâtre. At the end of the square, in rue des Jongleurs, you will see the Hôtel de Guînes, a beautiful example of an 18th century town house which is now a favourite with artists, creators, and show producers who like to use its intimate atmosphere for organising meetings, exhibitions, plays and workshops, etc. As you go down to the left, in rue Paul-Doumer, up to the charming little square place de la Madeleine, you cannot miss Saint-Vaast abbey, which is home to the Fine Arts Museum and the Media Library. Take rue Robespierre on your way back for a short stop at the Musée des Compagnons (Travelling Tradesmen’s Museum) in the house where the famous revolutionary from Arras lived.
Musée des Compagnons
The house where Robespierre lived on the eve of the French Revolution is now home to a permanent exhibition that retraces the history of travelling tradesmen. Only open in the afternoon. Closed on Mondays. Closed on Wednesdays and Fridays from 1st October to 30 April.
